If it was just a case of Bristol Web Designers creating a few great looking pages and – Hey Presto! – their customer’s website is suddenly getting tonnes of traffic then things would be different.

But they don’t and things are not different. A good website doesn’t begin with a great looking design – it ends with it.

All good websites begin with one thing and one thing alone – well researched keyword analysis.

Bristol Web Design – Keyword Strategy

Some Bristol Web Design companies expect the client to know what their keywords are and, even worse, some just throw in a few at the end willy-nilly thinking the scatter-gun approach will at least hit something. Wrong wrong wrong!

Keyword research is not only about collaborating with the customer to find the most lucrative keywords for their business; it is about being honest with them about what is achievable.

Many Website Designers in Bristol will try and add keywords that get tens of thousands of searches each month, to a brand new site with no backlinks from other websites, no domain vintage and absolutely no chance of getting a Google page one position.

Web Design Bristol – Keyword Domain Names

Often web design in Bristol consists of telling the customer that if they buy a domain with a keyword in it then they will automatically get to the top of Google. Agreed, that a keyword-laden domain name still has some merit, but only if that is the most important keyword by a mile and that a concerted campaign of backlinking is combined with it.

We have seen new customers who are surprised to see that their www.bristolarchitect.co.uk web address is not appearing on Google Page one for that search because it has no backlinks and the site is not optimised in the slightest.

Doing Bristol Website Design the Right Way

For 11 years we have been showing businesses the right way to market their websites online and have consistently produced websites that work, bringing in website traffic , and with it, new sales and lead generation.

Any one can buy a website for £300, but don’t be surprised when it is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

When thinking about finding a website designer in Bristol, consider this: Do you want a catalogue site for your existing customers? ( A proverbial advertising billboard in the middle of the desert) Or do you want a website that will bring in new customers and new business? For websites that actually work call Free Range Websites today on 01275 371968 – Bristol Web Design with Intelligent Keyword Analysis – a winning combination.

How would you like to know exactly what your potential customers are typing into Google when they are looking for for businesses like yours? Think you know? You will likely be very surprised at the truth.

In our day-to-day business we speak to customers about their websites and what words they appear for in Google. The majority of the time they either don’t appear at all or only appear in the results for one or two main keywords. The other common occurrence is that they have chosen a keyword to appear for that has 70 searches a month when there is another more suitable one that has 7000 searches per month.

So, most potential customers would bite our hands off to find out how to increase their visibility by 10,000%? Wrong. There is so much disinformation distrust and disillusionment among companies who have had their hands bitten before that many will not even give you the time of day.

After 11 long years in this business, one thing is still as true today as it was in the beginning; most business people have little or no knowledge of effective internet marketing. Many more business people nowadays know that they need a well optimised website, with one main keyword on each page, a lot of backlinks and a social media presence. The difficulty is they don’t know where to start.

For us, the place to start is with the keywords. We take the time to understand a customer’s business and then research the very best keywords. These keywords fit into a simple graph.

On one side is how difficult it is to get a keyword to appear on Page One of Google. For example to get a rank for the yellow keyword you would need a very well marketed website with loads of backlinks.

For a new customer with a brand new website their best initial option would be the blue keyword. It has a reasonable amount of monthly searches on Google UK and there isn’t any competition so the chances of getting a Google Page One position for it are good.

Once the new site has had a few months of gathering backlinks (links pointing back from other websites) then they could mop up the searches for the green keyword too. It will be another few months – depending on their monthly backlinking campaign spend before they start to rank on the others.

A decade a go nobody knew what keywords people were looking for. Nowadays, you can tell how many people were looking for which keywords on a monthly basis, target the most lucrative and achievable keywords and avoid the ones that no one is looking for.

Once these words are embedded into the fabric of the new website and some backlinks are mentioning these keywords in a variety of ways then the site will start rising through the Google Ranks and start bringing in extra customers.

To avoid delay id is best to set up a Google Adwords to start ranking on Page One for these keywords straight away. Using Google Analytics you can work out whether Paid or Organic brings in the most visitors and work out your Cost Per Click for both options.

Many people running their own Google Adwords campaigns complain about how much they have to pay for each click through (Pay Per Click – PPC) to their website and the poor sales results.

But this is the fault of their PPC strategy, as a well planned Adwords campaign can produce fantastic results.

When using Google Adwords most people target the primary keywords and end up paying a few pounds a pop for an advert click through in the more popular searches.

Quite often the primary keyword is very generalised and you will end up paying for visitors that are not actually interested in your site. So, not only do you pay a lot for the clicks, you end up with a high bounce rate and waste a lot of your daily budget.

At Apex SEO, we run Adwords campaigns based on the principle of long tail keywords. These are keywords that are longer and more specific and have a range of benefits:

Long tail keywords have less competition so reduce your PPC costs

Short tail keywords produce majority traffic but minority sales

Long tail searchers are closer to making a purchase

The customers you will attract with a long tail keyword strategy will have already done their initial more general research (paid for by your competitors who invest in short tail generic Adwords – thanks competition!) and will be ready to purchase.

For example, a customer is looking for garden furniture but is not sure what they want, so they type in a short tail keyword string - ‘garden furniture’ – into Google and click on a range of sites – paid and organic. All the paid ones courtesy of your competitors, and all this research is costing your competitors a pretty penny. After a good look around they decide they want wrought iron garden furniture – which just so happens to be the exact thing your company specialises in. So they are ready to buy and this time they type in a long tailed keyword string – ‘wrought iron garden furniture’ which is the one you got from Google Adwords at a tenth of the price of ‘garden furniture’.

Your competitor also specialises in wrought iron garden furniture but they have had to pay for people doing research on which garden furniture to choose, and people looking for plastic garden furniture but then click on the competitors advert just out of interest.

The competitor is soon going to burn through their daily budget and wont have much to show for it. You, on the other hand, have chosen a long tail keyword strategy that brings qualified leads right to the door of your store at a fraction of the price.

Next time you are planning a Google Adwords campaign, go to the Google Adwords keyword tool and try and find a long tailed keyword string – less popular but one that will bring more qualified search traffic to your site with their credit cards at the ready. Happy hunting!

Some of the more dubious quality SEO Bristol based companies have taken a battering recently and many are going to the wall on a weekly basis.

The reasons that many of these companies are failing are because:

They were selling products that relied on spinning content – using the same article and shoving it on every ezine site they could lay their hands on

For them, SEO optimising meant stuffing keywords in the website like it was a Christmas turkey

They bought links or exchanged links with bad neighbourhoods which had a negative effect on their clients’ rankings

Rather than putting in hard work they decided it would be easier to buy auto-submit signature spamming software that crammed forums across the world with useless nonsense

…or they just took the money and did absolutely nothing for it

Here at Apex SEO we have seen all of the above – Customers in shock that their results fell off a cliff after Google Panda’s last update – Businesses paying good money to SEO companies only to find they were just taking the money and doing absolutely nothing for it – Companies getting Google warnings on their websites because of the unsavoury practices being utilised by their SEO suppliers. And on and on it goes…

Now, it is Google Penguin that is ruffling feathers in the SEO world with a crackdown on dubious link practices.

So where does it leave the good guys like ourselves. Well, thankfully we have been doing organic SEO for the last 11 years and try and work in harmony with Google rather than trying to trick her. Yes, it’s frustrating when, white hat strategies become grey and yes, it’s restricting having to dance to Google’s tune, but it’s the only game in town as they delivery 80% of all web traffic. At the end of the day, Google are an information provider and they want to supply their searchers with the very best resources, not just some black hat tat that has got to the top of Google results by unfair means and foul. Plus, Google is a business, and they want people to buy adwords not just rely on SEO, so don’t be surprised if they don’t make it easy for us.

At Apex we concentrate on the long game and produce backlinks and unique articles that will stand the test of time. These are not quick solutions and do not provide immediate results. If a customer needs a quick fix we use Google Adwords. It’s been a long time coming, but now unique content and superb social engagement is the name of the game, and those SEO Bristol based companies that are still standing – and still spamming – need to wake up and smell the Penguin.

Here is some SEO advice for webmasters to help make their site more search engine friendly:

As much space on the page must be dedicated to fresh new unique content

Use robots code (eg. dofollow) to enable better site indexing

Use an xml sitemap

Add a youtube video – Google Rank #1 is 50 x more likely

Put as much content as possible outside of rich media content

Do not copy and paste content directly from other sites

Use short concise sentences that are easy to read

Put both internal links and external links on a page (external to open in new window)

Include 301 redirects to home page

All images to have alt tags

In the title, if you must use your company name, put it at the end

Use your keyword phrase in on page links. In other words, if your target is “seo” then link to “seo” instead of a “Click here” link. Or use Click SEO for more information

Put your location in the text of your page, e.g Bristol, and South West, and UK to help get found in local searches.

Don’t stuff your text with keywords. It won’t work. Search engines look at how many times a term is in your content and if it is abnormally high, will count this against you rather than for you. 2-5% is about right.

Free Range Websites are proud to announce the launch of Mauritius Holiday Villas.

When the Mauritius villas owners came to us in 2009 asking for help to market their own luxury villa in Mauritius none of us had any idea how quickly things would take off.

The villa owners Mauritius odyssey began when Free Range Websites did some internet marketing for them, and their Mauritius Villa went from being rented out part of the year, to being rented out for the whole year. They were still getting tons of enquiries so we persuaded them to help some other Mauritius villa owners to rent out their villas. With a few simple Adobe PDF Mauritius villa fact sheets they were soon making the most of enquirers coming to them asking about villas to rent in Mauritius.

Soon they had many villas on their books, and in November 2011 they came back to ask us to build a big online brochure of all their luxury Mauritius villas. Now they are all set and are over in Mauritius (not that we’re jealous!) finalising the addition of 7 more luxury Mauritius Villas to rent. Plus they are starting to build their own luxury villa number two.

With their easy-to-use content management system website they will be able to add as many luxury holiday villas as they like at no extra cost and uploading is so quick they should still have time to enjoy a bit of the lovely weather in Mauritius.

Oh, what’s that Wendy? A cyclone? Oh dear what a pity

We wish them all the very best and hope we can continue to help them build even more luxury Mauritius Holiday Villas.

After many late nights and constant trans-continental communication between the UK and Malawi we are proud to announce the re-design for Nature’s Gift Permaculture (NGP) is now live!

NGP have recently appointed a new Executive Director, Oliver Wootton, who took over from Co-founder Hope Thornton, in June this year. This management change has elicited exciting new initiatives and projects in the organisation. This needed to be reflected in a brand new re-design and, as all our sites are fully updateable, it was done within the existing website structure.

We also added these new projects to the in-built Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) core of the website to ensure they attained a top position on Google and other search engines.

The site now appears 2nd on Google when searching for ‘permaculture malawi‘ (one of our other sites is 1st!). It also comes 3rd for ‘food and nutrition security in malawi‘, beating competition from Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other international development agencies with multi-million pound budgets.

This site is a great example of our Organic Website Design principles; working in harmony with our customers to ensure their website continues to adapt to their ongoing needs.

Suggested New Year’s resolutions for the forward-thinking small business – help your business grow organically online by following a few simple tips.

Keyword check – Type into Google the words that potential customers might use to find you, if you can’t find your business then neither can they.

Company name check – Type your business name into Google and see who has information about you out there. It’s good to be popular and the more positive links pointing back to you, the better.

Be more social – If you think Twitter is a birdwatcher and RSS is a car turbo, then you need to brush up on social media. It’s instant, it’s very popular and can be extremely lucrative.

Go Pro – If there is a professional body/organisation/association for your profession then join it and make sure they put your web address on their website. This will give you extra brownie points with the search engines.

No Go Slow – If your website takes more than a second or two to download then you need to streamline it ASAP. Google and other search engines want to provide searchers with super-fast responses and nobody likes a slow-coach.

Happy New Year for 2012

A Web 2.0 post modern website requires a number of things to turn it into a living entity. First up, it needs to work in harmony with the search engines. Use an organic strategy that is transparent and honest and is the result of many hours of work rather than ‘black hat’ SEO gimmickry that inevitably end in being kicked out of the search engine listings.

Secondly, it must work in real time to be a true organic website. A blog is a step in the right direction, a search facility is fine, but more interactive content is required to satisfy the needs of your potential customers.

Third and finally, you need to back up your organically grown website with a solid online marketing plan that brings customers to your website perhaps through the search engines, but not because of them.

An organically grown website will grow your business. Just make sure you get the right advice from the outset.
